Kathleen Frugé-Brown, painter and printmakerARTIST STATEMENT I am a painter and printmaker with a long-standing interest in landscape. The river and forest surrounding my Pacific Northwest studio are a constant source of imagery and spiritual nourishment to me, and for the last several years have been the major subject of my work. My landscape paintings are all done outdoors from life, usually in oil on canvas, though I often do smaller pieces in oil on paper. One of the things I love about painting in the woods is the way you can keep on looking back between the branches and the underbrush, and there’s always another layer of things to be seen. Painting the river is the same way: there are the things you see under the water, and in the water, and the water itself, and the light that reflects off the water, and the far bank, and the woods beyond. . . The spatial complexity makes me look deeply and work vigorously to capture what I can before the light changes. When I succeed, my hope is that my work gives the viewer a strong sense of place and moment, and a feeling of invitation and entry into the natural world. My own roots have gone down deep into my river valley in the hours I’ve stood painting. I feel that the world of nature is our true home, though in our day people have little opportunity to connect with it. That’s what I want my work to do: awaken people’s recognition and love for the natural world around them.
